Music and Drumming

Efforts to reach culturally diverse communities

The music and drumming have a universal appeal. Among the many benefits of the traditional drumming that is an essential ingredient of our festival, are its therapeutic and healing effects. Certain drum rhythms mirror the human heartbeat and have been used for healing throughout the centuries. They offer a special appeal for persons with disabilities. For example, many people who are classified "hearing impaired" can "hear" or "feel" the beat of the drum and even enjoy dancing to the drum. People who are "visually impaired" may internally "visualize" and experience the essence of the rhythms. It has been demonstrated that people who have physical disabilities, such as problems walking, will still dance and move in harmony to the drum. The drumming and chanting offer stimulation and relaxation for all types of people--whether they have disabilities, are "depressed" and need to be cheered up, or just anyone who likes to be inspired! Histories and stories can be told through drum-songs.

ZEYBRAH offers cultural arts workshops in Asbury Park, Matawan and Long Branch. We teach and offer workshops about the folkloric content that is a part of our festival. We also utilize the arts as a springboard for discussions of philosophy, history and concepts related to modern living. Our aim is to present positive alternatives for youth and adults that promote cultural awareness, self-esteem and social responsibility.
